For those of you who are recruiting new talent to your business, it’s important to understand the roll social media plays in informing you about your candidates.

Do your homework. Know as much as you can about who you’re hiring, and thinking of hiring. Just remember, social media is also a place where people have fun. You might find more than you want to.

CLICK HERE to read the NY Times article.

But I Don’t Have Time for Social Media!

You have to, if you’re a small business. How long does it take to Tweet? Thirty seconds? A Minute? What about FaceBook? If you’ve bought a phone in the last three years, you can do it from your phone.

What do I Tweet, you ask. Tweet what you’re doing, or at least, what makes you and your business interesting. A Tweet is a mini-blog and a great way to inform people about what your company is doing. Same with FaceBook. Share pictures, link to friends, become a fan of your favorite brands and causes, and whatever you do, do it often.

Developed by Peter Shankman, a PR Professional, HARO enables reporters and authors to submit short queries in the form of an email, over HARO’s vast network.

Business experts, professionals, and experts in their fields subscribe to the HARO newsletter, which comes out several times a day. These experts scan the queries for topics they are able to speak to. The experts then contact the reporter or author, in the hopes of being mentioned as an expert in an upcoming story or book.

For those of you who are authors, looking for top-of-the-line stories for your company’s blogs or newsletters, HARO is a great place to submit queries. Via HARO, I’ve acquired over 64 stories from small businesses across the country, who’ve used social media to expand their business.

Thanks Peter Shankman!

Check out my upcoming book:
42 Rules of Social Media for Small Business

To dispel the myth, a blog is typically an online journal that contains information in the form of text, pictures, video, and other forms of media.

Businesses can use blogs to their advantage to:
Increase their presence in online searches
Improve visibility of their product
Keep customers up-to-date on company events
Showcase company pictures and video
Interview industry experts and promote company ideals
